Off-site connectivity via Staff Remote Desktop and External Drive
Staff that require University network access who are based outside of the main precinct (or who work from home regularly) are able to use the remote desktop service to access secure or confidential data. The Staff Remote Desktop is personal to each user and you can configure your own shortcuts, filestore mappings, desktop backgrounds and icons as required. If you do not have a University of Bristol login, you may need to apply for honorary status in order to be given an account to access the network. We manage access to the faculty’s ‘External’ drive, which allows you to store and share information securely on the University of Bristol network. We can provide advice to help you map this location to your desktop (or remote desktop) and set your permissions to allow access to the correct folders.
Academy Remote Desktop
Our Clinical Academies are teaching and learning facilities based within seven NHS Trusts, and function as University of Bristol campuses that are located outside of the main precinct. Our team provides support for students connecting to the University of Bristol network through a UoB-NHS Remote Desktop system. If you encounter any problems with the service, it may be useful to have a look through the Students’ Guide to IT Services document. To report any technical problems, the first port of call should be the IT Services Help Desk (0117 928 7870) and logging a request using the Self Service Tool.
Wireless and Eduroam connectivity at UoB and Academies
Free wireless access is available through Eduroam, and is currently supported throughout the main University of Bristol precinct as well as in certain areas within the University Hospitals Bristol Trust site and Bristol City Council areas. After a successful pilot project in collaboration with Weston General Hospital to implement Eduroam connectivity across the hospital area, it has now been rolled out to a number of other Clinical Academies for use in clinical and teaching areas.
If you have Eduroam already configured on your mobile device or computer, you can access it there in the same easy way as you do on campus. However, if you have not yet set up Eduroam on your device, you will need to access the internet through another method first (e.g. the Bristol Wifi Setup network available on campus, or via a mobile data connection) and visit the Wireless Services page to install it in advance.
